Maori Meanings

We took a boat out onto Lake Taupo and got close to the glorious Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay. They are over 10 metres high and accessible only by water – in our case very choppy water.

The face on the largest carving above depicts Ngatoroirangi a visionary High Priest and navigator of the Te Arawa canoe, which sailed to New Zealand from Hawaiki during the great migration in the 13th Century.

It is a mystery to know how they carved it, just amazing, pleased you came back from the boat trip. Was worried you might have been involved in the helicopter crash over the glacier, very thankful that when the names were read you were not listed. Blessings on those who have lost their lives and for their loved ones.

Like Mary, I was also worried that you had been involved in the dreadful helicopter crash and shared the sense of relief when confirmed that you were not. How very sad that those tourists and the pilot lost their lives whilst attempting to see something so wonderful and spectacular. In the midst of life, we are in death.
