Christchurch

We were saddened by the devastation of the city centre in the earthquake of 2011. Many buildings are still in much the same state as they were post the big quake and the numerous after shocks.

The original Christchurch Cathedral and Christchurch Transitional Cathedral appear to be poignant and iconic reminders of this journey to reclaim the soul of the city.

Discovered a red balloon between two rows of seats and experienced a strange sense of renewed hope as it soared up towards the cardboard roof.

It is sad to hear that many of the buildings in Christchurch are in much the same state as they were after the earthquake. I would have thought the reconstruction of the city would have been a priority, but I acknowledge that it is a massive and expensive undertaking for the public authorities. When you look at previous examples of devastation caused by recent earthquakes (China, Japan, Italy and Nepal) you can see how the damage cause in just a few seconds can take many years to rebuild.
