Kauri grove

Drove the ‘309’ mostly gravel road between Whitianga and Coromandel to the Waiau Kauri Grove to encounter a group of 600 year old trees.

The walk through the native bush was refreshing in the drizzling rain; the Kauri stand, wonderous. We felt graced by their presence.

It’s no use asking that tree “Do you come here often?” or “Is this the way to Amarillo?”. It probably only speaks Maori and will be sick to the back teeth of Britishers looming up and asking for egg and chips and a pot of tea. You’ll be wearing string vests and kiss-me-quick hats before long. The reputation of the British abroad is bad enough!
